R1.4bn cocaine bust at harbour |
|
|
|
|
Port Elizabeth - Cocaine with a street value of about R1.4bn, was seized in an "unusual" container at the Ngqura harbour in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday, police said.
"The container was unusual in that it looked like a petrol tank and had a construction with pillars holding it together," police spokesperson Captain Sandra van Rensburg said.
"Inside the container we found 22 000 litres of oil and inside the pillars, the cocaine was hidden."
Police were still trying to establish the amount of drugs in the container. By late on Wednesday afternoon, they weighed out about 100kg, with an estimated street value of about R1.4bn.
Police suspect there was about 250kg of "pure cocaine".
"Right now, we still need to pump oil out of the container to see if there are more pillars inside," said Van Rensburg.
No arrests had been made yet.

R10m drug bust in North West |
|

|
Johannesburg - A drugs laboratory has been discovered and two people were arrested in Klerksdorp, North West police said on Saturday.
"The bust [by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Unit] followed an intensive undercover investigation conducted after the police's elite unit were tipped off," said police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Lesego Metsi.
Twenty-one kilograms of final product of what is suspected to be Tik, with a street value of R10m, was found.
Two men found inside the house were arrested. Police also found chemicals, raw-materials for drug production and equipment used to manufacture drugs.
Metsi said the police would be investigating the "operational network of this drug manufacture and dealers".
He said the two men, aged 27 and 28, will appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrate's court on August 23 facing charges of the manufacture of drugs and keeping a drug laboratory.

Johannesburg - A man was arrested after he was caught with dagga with an estimated street value of R340 000 in Potchefstroom, a North West department of public safety spokesperson said on Monday.
The 28-year-old man was pulled over by traffic police for a traffic infringement at about 19:00, Lesiba Kgwele said.
He was allegedly transporting 23 bags of dagga from Ficksburg to Soweto.
Traffic officers realised that the licence disc on the car did not correspond with the number plates.
He also could not produce a driver's licence and was arrested.
He would appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Pregnant prostitute paid with drugs |
|
|
|
|
A Joburg woman says she was lured to Cape Town with the promise of work, but when she arrived was forced into prostitution and to use heroin.
And despite being three months pregnant, she told vice squad members who helped her that the father of her unborn child had still forced her to carry on with sex work.
Vice squad spokesman Neil Arendse said the 25-year-old woman approached members patrolling in Brooklyn last week and begged them to help her.
He said she told the members that her friend, a foreigner living in Cape Town, had paid for her flight from Joburg to Cape Town.
It was not clear when she arrived in the Western Cape.
"(Her friend) said he had a job for her in his shop.
"But when she got here there was no shop and he put her on heroin and forced her to work on the streets," Arendse said.
The woman, who said she was forced to work as a prostitute, had also said her friend had paid her in heroin.
"She told us we had to help her immediately because her friend wasn't there at that moment," Arendse said.
The woman had been staying with her friend in his car as he had nowhere to live.
Arendse said she was now staying in a place of safety and the Hawks were investigating her case.
During other operations some women had told vice squad members they had been bought from other areas, such as Pretoria and Joburg, and forced into prostitution but did not want to give this up as this meant giving up the drugs they were paid with, Arendse said.
"These girls are threatened and drugged... they have no motivation to go home," he said.

Johannesburg - Police have uncovered a major drug factory in Balfour on Wednesday, Mpumalanga police said.
Captain Leonard Hlathi said the factory, at Springsfontein Farm, apparently produced a ton of Mandrax monthly with an estimated face value of R10m.
"The structure is the size of two tennis courts. We found three presser machines, each machine produces 70 000 tablets an hour, mixers and several bags containing different chemicals."
Hlathi said the house had industrial stoves used to manufacture the pills.
The equipment and chemicals found at the premises had an estimated value of R5m, he said.
Two men, including the alleged mastermind, were arrested and were expected to appear in the Balfour Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

SAA staffer hid drugs in undies |
|
|
|
|
Johannesburg - The South African Airways cabin crew member who was caught with 3kg of cocaine at Heathrow airport, apparently hid the drugs in her underwear.
Elphia "Tshidi" Dlamini, 42, was the cabin co-ordinator of the flight, meaning she was the most senior cabin crew official on board.
The captain of the flight happened to be the same captain whose crew came under fire in February last year when a shipment of 5kg of cocaine was found in the luggage of cabin crew members at the same airport.
The matter was not pursued as the owner of the bag could not be positively identified.
A month before this, SAA also made news headlines when 50kg dagga and 4kg cocaine was found in cabin crew's luggage.
SAA spokesperson Fani Zulu said the rest of the crew were allowed to resume their duties on Saturday as the drugs this time had been found on a particular person. The crew flew back to South Africa on Monday evening.
Sniffer dog
Dlamini, who is from Cape Town, is believed to be related to a prominent family in South Africa. She has been working for SAA for 14 years.
The drugs were found after a sniffer dog identified her during a random search at Heathrow, Beeld learned.
According to acquaintances, Dlamini recently told how had hidden £1 000 (about R11 400) under her hotel bed's mattress on a previous trip to London and had forgotten it there.
The hotel contacted her and said the money would be kept for her.
"It is strange that a cabin crew official can play with so much money and it made all of us wonder," a friend told Beeld.
The British customs agency confirmed on Monday that Dlamini had been charged with drug smuggling.
She appeared in a court in Uxbridge.
Zulu confirmed that stricter safety measures were put in place to search cabin crew's luggage before flights after last year's incidents. The measures were however not extended to personal searches as drugs, as far as was known, had not been smuggled like this before.
Zulu said SAA was giving its full co-operation to British investigators and supported the most stringent law enforcement possible.
After the two previous drug incidents, in which SAA cabin crew members had been implicated, pilots had pleaded for stricter measures to prevent smuggling as it could harm their careers, but they were unable to do anything about it.

Johannesburg - Two South African women were arrested at the Komatipoort Border Post after they were allegedly found in possession of 1 988 mandrax tablets on Sunday, Mpumalanga police said.
The women aged 50 and 28 were travelling in a bus from Mozambique that was stopped by border police to search passengers, police spokesperson Leonard Hlathi said. The drugs with a street value of R99 400 were found stashed in a handbag and purse belonging to one of the women.
The 50-year-old woman allegedly confessed that the drugs belonged to her and claimed that the younger one had nothing to do with the tablets.
But Hlathi said both women were arrested as they were travelling together and that it was common for those caught to claim the other was innocent.
The women will appear in the Komatipoort Magistrate's Court on Monday to face charges of drug dealing.
