Report: Donnybrook outreach with CYP Jan 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Mbuso Mbanjwa reported that TNT's outreach combined with Concerned Community / Concerned Young People from 18-28 January 2010 was very successful. The teams visit 142 schools during this time. TNT spoke on the dangers of drugs and alcohol and the link that it has with prostitution.

Mbuso reported that many of the teachers and learners were happy and thankful for the message that was brought by these young people. He also mentioned that they have founded that many young people were missing and this is a clear and visible sign of the effect of human trafficking in this area.

In some cases girls are drugged sold into prostitution, a modern form of slavery. One such testimony was given at a recent Community meeting in January 2010.

For more information about this campaign, feel free to cantact us or Concerned Community (www.preciousyouth.org.za).

Report: TNT, Prostitution, Deputy Minister of Finance PDF Print E-mail
On Saturday, 16 January 2010 TNT members attended and addressed a community meeting in KZN (Kranskop). The Deputy Minister of Finance and other goverment officials and leaders also attended. TNT members had the opportuniy to address the meeting on the dangers of and link between Drugs and Prostitution. At the moment prostitution is a very hot debate in SA. Here is some background regarding the prostitution issue in South Africa...
BBC reported the following:
SA prostitution plans condemned
(Wednesday, 16 July 2008 UK)
  • Durban's municipality said Germany had many adult entertainment centres during the World Cup in 2006, which were very popular with visitors. It said while prostitution was illegal in South Africa, it could not ignore the fact that the sex industry thrives during major events like the World Cup.
  • In January, MP George Lekgetho called for prostitution to be legalised during the tournament. "It is one of the things that would make it a success," he said. He told parliament that it would help cut incidences of rape. The BBC's Mpho Lakaje in Johannesburg says his suggestion was met with derision by other MPs.
  • A group representing sex workers welcomed MP George Lekgetho's suggestion. "We would support any legalisation of sex work, particularly during the 2010 World Cup," Nicola Fick from the Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Task Force (Sweat) told the BBC.
  • The idea of legalising sex workers was first proposed last year by police commissioner Jackie Selebi, who has since been suspended over corruption charges.

Reaching out to prostitutes/ street kids PDF Print E-mail
prostitution slavery
Regularly TNT is approached by the organisation Concerned Communities to address groups of young people that come off the street and out of prostitution. Concerned Communities or as they are called in Zulu Umphakathi Okhathazekile, was formed earlier this year with the sole purpose of educating people about the truth of prostitution. They reach out a helping hand to girls and boys involved in prostitution. They also represent the concerns of the communities to both Provincial and National Government.
There is a good relationship with the Concerned Community group from TNT's side, because the areas that we work in overlap so much. Prostitution and substance abuse. This is their mission and vision:
Mission
The Concerned Young People serves and assists young people in need, by uplifting their lives and thus empowering them to live with dignity.

Vision
The Concerned Young People aims to rebuild the moral fibre of the country by strengthening the present generation's principles of integrity and respectability.

TNT's report on Saturday 5 September 2009 was taken from the following:

Argentina - Decriminalised the use of Dagga (Cannabis)
Supreme Court President Ricardo Lorenzetti said private behaviour was legal, "as long as it doesn't constitute clear danger".
"The state cannot establish morality,"  But the court said it was not advocating a complete decriminalisation of the drug - a move possibly aimed at deflecting criticism
from the Church and conservatives, says the BBC's Candace Piette in Buenos Aires.
